Video lessons · Unit 5: Turns and passing
The Right Turn
Red light and you want to turn right? Can you? Grandpa explains it in one minute.
What you'll learn
- You can turn right on a red light but only after a COMPLETE stop, and only if there's no sign forbidding it.
- A red arrow? Not there: you wait for the green.
- And when you turn, stay close to the right and finish in the right lane. Don't swing wide into the other lane.
Test yourself: 5 exam-style questions
1. You're making a right turn. Where do you start it?
- From any lane, as long as you signal
- From the left lane, swinging wide
- From the right lane, close to the curb
- From the middle lane, to have more room
Show answer
Answer: From the right lane, close to the curb
Hug the curb, kiddo. That way nobody slips in on your right.
2. You finish a right turn onto a multi-lane street. Which lane do you enter?
- The right lane, the closest one
- Whichever lane has fewer cars at the moment
- The left lane, to get ahead right away
- The middle lane, to stay out of everyone's way
Show answer
Answer: The right lane, the closest one
Short, clean turn into the nearest lane. Want another one? Change later.
3. On a two-way street you're turning left. Where do you start?
- From the right lane, to see better
- From the shoulder, to stay out of the way
- From whichever lane is emptiest at that moment, even the right one
- From the left lane, next to the center line
Show answer
Answer: From the left lane, next to the center line
Close to the center line. That way the cars behind can go around on your right.
4. When turning left, what mistake should you avoid?
- Cutting the corner into the oncoming lane
- Signaling before you reach the corner, since it confuses other drivers
- Waiting for oncoming cars to go by
- Ending in the nearest left lane
Show answer
Answer: Cutting the corner into the oncoming lane
Cut the corner and you're in the oncoming lane. That's where crashes happen.
5. On a one-way street, you turn left onto another one-way street. How?
- From the right lane into the left lane
- From the middle lane into the middle lane, always
- From the far-left lane into the far-left lane
- From the left lane into any lane you like
Show answer
Answer: From the far-left lane into the far-left lane
Left to left, kiddo. Simple as that.
